Dressing fun in the winter: Coats

Styling outfits during the cold winter months can easily feel repetitive. Even the most well-curated outfit is soon wrapped in a multitude of layers from extra jumpers to coats, hats and scarves in order to stay warm. Especially, as I have a tendency to feel extra cold, my season of wrapping up extends well into autumn and spring!

I really do enjoy spending time outdoors, so my outdoor layered additions easily end up being the outfil on most days!

So the question is – how to choose outerwear that you will like, enjoy and appreciate the whole cold season? What are the best strategies for layering?

In this post we start with coats!

Coats

When shopping for a new coat, we have a couple of things to consider: colour, silhouette, material and warmth

Colour, silhouette, material

It is tempting to choose a dark colour to look warm in the winter, however this will make your outfits dark for a big part of the year, and you might miss some brightness as the days get shorter and darker. Instead a lighter colour transitions better from the early cold days in late autumn to the early days of spring.

The silhouette needs to work with the rest of your outfit and your general style. I prefer a formal / smart style and I wear mostly skirts and dresses, so I like to go for a dressy A-line or straight silhouette.

I like a sleek finish, and find wool-coats bring together form and material beautifully.

Warmth

Consider how warm your coat of choice can keep you, and how it can work with layers. This year I have opted for an open v-neck with a beautiful fur collar. I decided from the beginning to get a think and warm down jacket in cream to wear under. This has been really successful!

I am really excited for my coat choice this season! This coat is from Zara, and I feel it combines silhouette, colour and warmth. Are you too happy with your coat this winter season?
